The renewed yard of a characterful house

We had the pleasure of designing the garden of Liisa and Osmo’s house. Design was based on the architecture of the house and the view to the pine forest behind the house.

Liisa and Osmo were hoping for a different kind of garden. “Instead of blooming perennials or grass, we wanted bushes, especially different shapes, colours and values. I also wanted it to be easy to maintain,” explains Liisa.

Mats Wikström, our gardening wizard, was responsible for the execution and design of the garden. “It was great to be told not to be too gentle with the choice of plants,” Mats says with a smile. “Liisa and Osmo basically gave us carte blanche, with only a few guidelines.”

The front yard is also a natural continuum for the coniferous forest.

Granite steps that blend into the rock form the entrance to the back yard.

Liisa and Osmo say that the end result matches their wishes. “Absolutely beautiful colours and textures. The plants are in all shades of green, red and yellow. I also got aisles, meticulous and beautiful stone paving, secluded areas, hay swaying in the wind and a renewed patio.”

Harmony with the environment was also achieved. “The overall result fits perfectly with the old garden’s big climbing hydrangeas and bittersweets growing along the old pines”, admires Liisa. “It is a stunning view with a minimal amount of work.”

Additions were made to the old patio. Now the yard is entered via distinctive steps that also include a planting box which is easy to maintain.

There’s barely any need to weed when plants are surrounded with woodchip mulch. The amount of gardening was also decreased by a reduction of the grass area. The choice of plants, stone paving and mulch blur the boundary between forest and garden.

There are several wild-like levels in the yard. Seasonal plants can be added to the garden in clay pots that fit fantastically with the asymmetric steps. The plants in the planting cribs made of wall stones had not yet bloomed when the picture was taken in the beginning of the summer.
